About the role

The Turbine Diaphragm Welder will be responsible for the repair, fabrication, and refurbishment of steam turbine diaphragms and related components used in power generation facilities. This is a highly specialized position requiring precision welding expertise and a strong working knowledge of steam turbine internals

ONSITE ROLE: This position is based on site at the Lark facility in Mount Holly, North Carolina. This is not a travel-based position.

Responsibilities

  • Perform TIG (GTAW) and other welding processes on steam turbine diaphragms, including nozzle repair, partition weld refurbishment, and structural weld repairs on inner and outer rings
  • Fabricate and repair diaphragm components including nozzles, spacer bands, sidewalls, and seal segments using stainless steel, Inconel, carbon steel, and other alloy materials
  • Assess and repair damage modes including foreign object damage, solid-particle erosion, moisture erosion, cracking, and structural weld failure
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, weld procedure specifications (WPS), and work instructions to execute repairs to OEM tolerances
  • Set up, operate, and maintain welding equipment including TIG/MIG machines, grinders, and plasma cutting torches
  • Perform pre- and post-weld heat treatment as required per engineering specifications
  • Conduct dimensional inspections and quality checks using precision measuring instruments to verify compliance with engineering specifications
  • Collaborate with engineers, machinists, and quality personnel to plan repair sequences and prioritize workload
  • Document work completed including weld records, traveler sheets, and quality inspection reports
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in compliance with all facility safety policies and applicable regulations
  • Assist with other turbine component repairs as assigned, including blade rings, casings, seals, and rotating components

Experience / Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in precision or industrial welding, preferably in power generation, turbine repair, or heavy manufacturing
  • Proficiency in TIG (GTAW) welding on stainless steel, Inconel, and alloy materials is required
  • Demonstrated experience reading and working from engineering drawings, blueprints, and weld procedure specifications
  • Knowledge of steam turbine diaphragm construction styles including spacer-band, fillet fabrication, and mechanically assembled designs
  • Familiarity with weld inspection methods including visual inspection and liquid penetrant testing (PT)
  • Ability to use precision measurement tools including calipers, micrometers, and dial indicators
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to perform close-tolerance work consistently
  • High school diploma or equivalent; completion of a welding program or apprenticeship preferred

Preferred Qualifications

  • AWS (American Welding Society) certification or equivalent
  • Experience with post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) procedures
  • Prior work in a nuclear, fossil, or combined-cycle power plant maintenance environment
  • Familiarity with GE, Siemens, Westinghouse, or other OEM turbine diaphragm designs
  • Experience with MIG (GMAW), plasma cutting, and oxy-acetylene processes
