Product Engineer
Edinburgh
Wordsmith
Wordsmith is building the legal operations platform for in-house teams, and we are growing fast.
We believe in-house legal is becoming one of the most important functions in the AI era. Every business is moving faster, but legal work is still too often scattered across inboxes, chats, documents, and disconnected systems.
Wordsmith brings that work into one system. Requests come in from across the business, AI agents handle the routine, lawyers stay in control where judgment matters, and every step is captured as work happens.
We are built for in-house legal, not law firms. Our goal is to help legal teams move faster, reduce unnecessary external counsel spend, and become a function the business can run with.
More than 500 companies, including Financial Times, Safelite, Trip.com, Canva, Starling, and Sage, use Wordsmith. Backed by $100M from Index Ventures, General Catalyst, Highland Europe, and others, we are building one of the defining companies in legal AI.
Why this role is different
Our engineering team is not using AI as a feature. It’s how we build.
Engineers here are expected to explore, test, and apply AI directly in how we design and ship product. There’s no heavy process, no layers of approval, and no hesitation around new approaches.
If something works, we use it. If it doesn’t, we move on quickly.
You’ll have the freedom to experiment, shape how AI is used in the product, and push beyond the patterns most teams are still stuck in.
The Role
You’ll build product features end to end, working across frontend and backend, and ship AI-native workflows used by real customers.
You’ll work closely with design, product, and legal engineers to turn complex problems into simple, high-quality user experiences.
This is a role for someone who wants to move fast, stay close to users, and have a real impact on what gets built.
What you’ll do
Own features end to end across frontend and backend
Build AI-native workflows using LLMs and structured data
Collaborate closely with design, product, and legal engineering
Ship quickly, learn from users, and iterate
Contribute to architecture, tooling, and engineering practices
Help define how we use AI across the product
What we’re looking for
4+ years building high-quality web products
Strong experience with modern frontend tools (React, Next.js, TypeScript)
Backend experience (Python, Node, AWS or similar)
Strong product instincts — you care about UX, clarity, and outcomes
Comfortable working in fast-moving environments with evolving systems
Interest in AI and how it changes how software is built
Bonus:
Experience with LLMs, prompt design, or AI workflows
Background in building internal tools or complex workflows
How we work
We’re an in-office team in Edinburgh. We work together because it helps us build faster, collaborate closely, and make better product decisions. You should expect to be in the office as your default.
This is a high trust environment. Engineers have real ownership over what they build and how they build it.
We keep process light and focus on shipping, learning, and improving quickly.
What you can expect
Real ownership over product and technical decisions
The chance to work at the frontier of AI-native product development
A team of engineers, designers, and domain experts working closely together
Competitive salary and meaningful equity
Why Wordsmith
We’re growing quickly, shipping fast, and solving real problems for customers.
The product is evolving rapidly, and engineering plays a central role in how far and how fast we can go.
If you want to build with AI as a core part of your workflow, not just a layer on top, this is a strong place to do it.
